Mila Byron

Lawyer, Law Practice

Hi, I'm Mila Byron. Welcome to my profile!

Mila Byron's Bio:

Mila Byron has been an integral part of the Fort McMurray community for 10 years. As owner and managing partner of Byron and Company law firm based in Fort McMurray, she has served her community in real estate, estates law, business law and civil litigation. Mila graduated from the University of Ottawa in 2000, where she earned her law degree. Prior to studying the law, she attended McGill University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  Mila’s impressive legal resume begins before she even graduated from the University of Ottawa, when she spent two years reviewing decisions made by the Canadian Pension Board for the Office of the Commissioner of Review Tribunals. These decisions were reviewed to ensure that they were correct pursuant to applicable legislation. After earning her law degree, Mila worked as an associate for the international law firm of Golwing Lafleur Henderson in Calgary, Alberta. Building on this experience, she then served as Crown Prosecutor with the Government of Alberta’s Office of the Attorney General. As a Crown Prosecutor, she was actively involved in a number of high-profile criminal law cases. Mila moved to Fort McMurray in 2003 where she started the law firm of Byron and Company in partnership with her husband, Timothy Byron. Leaving the criminal prosecutor’s role, she adapted her legal focus to the needs of the community and specialized in civil and family law. Mila is committed to staying involved in her adopted community.  As one of the area’s senior lawyers, and as a private citizen of Fort McMurray, she continues her involvement in a variety of professional, community and volunteer services. In 2007, Mila was elected as a municipal councilor for Fort McMurray, a position she held until 2010. While serving as a councilor she proved to be a dedicated advocate for taxpayer-focused issues. Part of this included her drive for community planning and development while in office. Mila has served as a member of the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce and, also, the Fort McMurray Urban Development Institute. Both these organizations are set up to promote businesses and economic growth in the Wood Buffalo area. She has also been a member of the Fort McMurray Construction Association and the Wood Buffalo Builder’s Association.  Indeed, for her many activities promoting the business climate in the Wood Buffalo area, Mila was nominated for the prestigious RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards in 2012. In addition to these organizational pursuits, Mila has been a member of the Fort McMurray Bar Association and has dedicated her time to the Pro Bono Lawyers Association of Fort McMurray. The latter organization is dedicated to improving access to the legal system for all Alberta residents, no matter how far from an urban area or whether they can afford to hire an attorney or not. Mila advocates for animal welfare and habitat conservation in her spare time. She is an animal rescue volunteer and a contributing member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and the World Wildlife Fund Canada.
